“By nature people are learning animals. Birds fly; fish swim; humans think and learn. Therefore, we do not need to motivate children into learning by wheedling, bribing, or bullying. We do not need to keep picking away at their minds to make sure they are learning. What we need to do – and all we need to do – is to give children as much help and guidance as they need and ask for, listen respectfully when they feel like talking, and then get out of the way. We can trust them to do the rest.”
John Holt, How Children Learn

“If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.”
Rachel Carson, The Sense of Wonder

“One of the most obvious facts about grown-ups to a child is that they have forgotten what it is like to be a child.”
Randall Jarrell

… and my personal favourite:

“Parents must learn that their child is perfect and give them sensational respect.”
Natasja de Jong, age 4

A guest posting by Qianyi’s daddy

Qianyi enjoyed her first day at new school very much. Going to school is more exciting now because we need to take a bus!

Some kids were crying but Qianyi’s definitely a brave girl today. She didn’t cry even when I was leaving. Since it’s her first day, I was told to go back one hour later to pick her up. When I was back, she saw me and smiled at me but continued to do her work. Her teacher told me she was doing well. So, we stayed for another one hour.

She kept looking back when we were leaving. It looked as if she was reluctant to leave her new school. :)

We went to Chiaki’s home on our 3rd day in Melbourne. The two little girls enjoyed playing together. Hubby and I had a good chat with Chiaki’s parents too.

Chiaki’s mum is the first blogger I met. I didn’t expect I’d be able to make a friend via my blog. We have so much in common. She discovered my blog first and then we started corresponding via email. Chiaki’s Chinese name is Qianyi too.

I planned to celebrate Hubby’s 4th Father’s Day in Melbourne and I wanted to wish Chiaki’s dad a happy Father’s Day too but I clean forgot! I suddenly realized about it last Fri and I apologized to Hubby straightaway. He didn’t mind and told me he had forgotten about it too. He said, “Mother’s Day is always more important than Father’s Day!” Oh, I feel so guilty. But we had a good time with Chiaki and her parents on Father’s Day. :)

We took a drive round the world famous Great Ocean Road all the way to the fishermen’s town of Apollo Bay. The views along the way were absolutely breath-taking.

Unfortunately the winding roads proved a bit too much for poor Qianyi who threw up just after we arrived at our Apollo Bay hotel :-(

All was quickly forgotten and she was soon happily checking out the icy waters of the outdoor hotel pool…

Qianyi and I met up with Qianqian and her mum at United Square this morning. We first met each other during our evening stroll. Qianyi was learning to walk then and Qianqian was still sitting in her stroller. Time flies. Now Qianqian is as tall as Qianyi. We have moved away for one year now but Qianyi still feels comfortable with them.

Here’s a photo of lovely Qianqian and her pretty mum.

The two girls had a good time together. They enjoyed running around so much. The two poor mums kept chasing after them.

We also enjoyed Pokemon show together. :)

Qianyi’s classmate, Kai Qin lives near us. We usually would walk home together after class. When we reach her block, Qianyi would say goodbye to Kai Qin. Today, Kai Qin asked Qianyi, “Do you want to come to my house?” My sweetheart followed her and her aunty (maid) into the lift. So, we sent Kai Qin home.

I told her to say goodbye to Kai Qin outside her place. When the maid opened the door, Qianyi wanted to go in. The maid said, “You can come and play with Kai Qin next time.” Since she mentioned “next time”, I quickly carried Qianyi and left. She started crying. Poor girl, she felt lonely…

Back home, she didn’t finish her lunch. She kept trying to open the iron door and said “Bye, Kai Qin!”. She looked so upset. She mentioned Kai Qin a few times in the afternoon. It’ll be her last time to attend this school tomorrow and she won’t get to see Kai Qin. Kai Qin’s parents didn’t let her join the field trip tomorrow.

She’s taking her nap now. Hope her mood will be better when she wakes up.

Qianyi’s been quite happy during school holidays. She started attending holiday Chinese enrichment class yesterday. It’s only 2 hours in the morning. I signed her up for one week only because we are going to enjoy our winter holiday in Melbourne next week. Qianyi’s going to meet her little friend, Chiaki soon! :)

The photos above were taken this morning. It’s funny to see Qianyi and her classmate, Kai Qin do things together. When Qianyi sat down to put on her shoes, Kai Qin took her shoes and sat beside Qianyi to do it together. When I told Qianyi to drink some water, Kai Qin took out her water bottle to drink water too. While we were inside the lift, Qianyi bent down to readjust her shoes strap, Kai Qin followed too. When we were out of the lift, Qianyi started running. Needless to say, Kai Qin was running too. The two girls were so happy. They kept laughing.

The weather’s been very hot recently. I allow her to enjoy her bath longer. So, bath time is fun too!

Qianyi loves the cat next door. She would touch it whenever she sees it. It’s fat and very clean.

Look, the lazy cat managed to make our little sweetheart so happy!

While we were at the playground the other day, a little Indian boy enjoyed playing with Qianyi very much. When it started drizzling, he wanted to shake Qianyi’s hand before heading home. My cheeky girl refuse to let him do so. She ran away from him and the poor boy kept chasing after her. She kept laughing but was willing to let him shake her hand in the end.

She loves making funny faces… That’s my girl, my little happy darling! :)
